Union officials said they maintain their concerns, but have agreed to return buses to normal services.

“We will maintain our concerns but we accept that someone has to mediate in these matters.”

Unions said a bus fire earlier this year could have resulted in serious injuries to passengers which resulted in more than 700 gas-powered buses being withdraw from service today.

A union investigation of an incident in July had uncovered “alarming evidence” that the lives of passengers and were being put at risk, president of the Bus & Tram Division of the NSW Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) Gary Way said.

“Today we have obtained evidence that a fire on board an STA bus in July was more than just a fire.  In fact, video evidence conclusively shows that the back of the bus exploded.”
