Australian Medical Association puts bosses put on notice over sick leave

DOCTORS have warned bosses never to question a medical certificate when an employee misses work.

Australian Medical Association president Steve Hambleton yesterday said he feared employers might start doubting doctors’ notes after the Opposition questioned the absence of embattled Labor MP Craig Thompson from Federal Parliament this week.

The MP is being investigated by Fair Work Australia over his financial management of the Health Services Union.

He has provided a medical certificate stating he is unfit for work until March 23.

But Opposition Whip Warren Entsch said the doctor’s note was too vague and demanded a diagnosis.

Dr Hambleton said he worried employers would follow suit with inappropriate demands for private information.

He said doctors and patients should never have to explain themselves, with confidentiality “sacrosanct in this country”.

Dr Hambleton said the penalty for signing a false medical certificate could include the loss of a licence.
