Firies seek public’s help over arson in Dapto

Updated May 28, 2012 15:55:38

There’s been a series of deliberately lit fires in the Dapto area in recent days.

The station officer at Dapto Fire Station, Darin Sullivan, says the fires are becoming more dangerous.

“We had numerous grass fires lit all at the same time along the F6 and that caused disruption to traffic and certainly a danger to that passing traffic at high speed and we also had a truck fire lit in the early hours of Sunday morning,” he said.

Darin Sullivan says authorities suspect the same young people are responsible for the arson.

“There’s been young kids hanging around. One bushfire in particular we had two young children on an unregistered motorbike driving past the area as well,” he said. “Our concern at the fire station is that the kids are lighting fires that they might either get caught in themselves or that might cause some risk to the community in the process.”

Police are investigating the fires.

“These aren’t simple fires. These are quite dangerous in some examples and we’re certainly concerned so police and firefighters are asking anyone to keep an eye out and report fires as soon as they see them,” said Darin Sullivan.
