Rally over fire station closures | #CustsCostLives #FBEU #FRNSW

A rally is being held in Belmont this afternoon to pressure the State Government to over turn cuts to local fire stations.

The Belmont and Tingira Heights fire stations have been closed in recent weeks with staff sent to neighbouring stations.

Federal Shortland MP Jill Hall says she has received many calls from the community concerned about the station closures.

“I’ve called this meeting so that the community can come together and show just how concerned we are about the fact that fire crews from both Belmont and Tingira Heights are being regularly taken to Swansea,” she said.

“This leaves those communities at risk.”

The State Opposition leader John Robertson is expected to attend the rally.

The Fire Brigade Employees Union has blamed the closures on State Government cuts to the public services sector.

Ms Hall says it is not good enough.

“We all know that a fire can break out at any time and the important thing is to be able to respond quickly,” she said.

“With fire crews in other areas it can mean that people can loose their lives, loose their property, and I think it’s really important that we send a strong message to Barry O’Farrell that we want to ensure that our community is safe.”
